Tooth Extractions in Largo

Woman with severe tooth painAt Smile Solutions in Largo, FL, we know that no one looks forward to getting a tooth extracted, even when it is the best option for protecting your oral health. While Dr. Puustinen always prefers to save a natural tooth whenever possible, there are times when a tooth is so damaged or infected that it must be removed. When this is the case, Dr. Puustinen and her dental care team provide gentle tooth removal in a soothing setting.

Reasons You Might Need a Tooth Extraction

Dr. Puustinen may recommend a tooth extraction when a tooth is too damaged or infected to be repaired or when removing the tooth would be better for your oral health. Common reasons for tooth extraction include:

  • Severe infection or disease.
  • Advanced gum disease.
  • Cracked or broken teeth that can’t be restored.
  • Impacted wisdom teeth.
  • Tooth removal is needed before orthodontic treatment.
  • An abscess or infection that could spread to and damage the jawbone.

If tooth extraction is recommended, Dr. Puustinen will discuss your options before proceeding with removal.

The Extraction Processtooth being extracted

Most tooth extractions are simple in-office procedures. We numb the tooth and the surrounding area and use gentle techniques to remove it. Dr. Puustinen will gently rock the tooth back and forth until it is loose enough to remove. You may feel some pressure during this process, but you should not feel any pain.

Sectioning a Tooth

If a tooth is larger, such as a molar, or has curved roots, it may need to be removed in sections. Dr. Puustinen will cut the tooth into smaller pieces (sections), making it easier to remove the tooth without damaging the jawbone or irritating delicate gum tissue.

Aftercare

Following your tooth extraction, we provide you with detailed post-operative care instructions. Please follow these closely to ensure proper healing and minimize the risk of complications, such as a dry socket. Keep these tips in mind while you recover:

  • Gently biting down on gauze will help control bleeding on the first day.
  • Rest, stay hydrated, and avoid strenuous activity for the first 24 hours.
  • Cold compresses for the first two days will minimize swelling.
  • Eat soft food and avoid chewing near the extraction site.
  • Avoid using straws and vigorous rinsing for a few days.
  • Do not smoke for at least a few weeks after tooth extraction, as smoking slows the healing process and increases the risk of infection.

FAQs About Tooth Extractions

What can I eat after my tooth is extracted?

We recommend soft, cool, or lukewarm foods, such as yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, hummus, milkshakes, and smoothies (without a straw). Do not eat anything hard, hot, or chewy for a few days.

Does removing a tooth hurt?

No. You’ll feel pressure, but no pain, during the procedure. We numb the area and offer several sedation options if you prefer or if you suffer from dental anxiety. Some mild soreness afterward is normal but manageable with over-the-counter medication and ice packs. A bag of frozen vegetables wrapped in a clean cloth makes a good ice pack.

When will I be fully recovered?

Most people recover in 1 to 2 days and return to their normal activities. Still, complete healing of the extraction site may take up to two weeks. Following aftercare instructions will support a smooth recovery.

Will I need the tooth replaced?

Wisdom teeth do not have to be replaced, as there is generally no room for them, and they serve no purpose. Any other extractions will likely need a replacement tooth to maintain a healthy, aligned bite and prevent other teeth from shifting. There are several replacement options, which Dr. Puustinen will discuss with you at your initial appointment.

Is tooth extraction an emergency?

In some cases, yes. If you are experiencing intense pain, significant swelling, a fever, or signs of infection, it is a dental emergency. We offer emergency dental care for patients who need it. If you’re unsure whether your situation is an emergency, call us at Smile Solutions Phone Number (727) 585-6658 and we can determine whether immediate care is required.
